The Boil Water Advisory for Patearoa remains in effect. Upgrade work on the Patearoa Treatment Plant is being prioritised and is progressing well. We will continue to keep the community updated.
Council acknowledges the inconvenience this advisory caused and sincerely thank the residents for their patience, cooperation and resilience throughout this period.
Residents and visitors to Patearoa are advised that a Boil Water Advisory is to be in place until December 2025.
Please continue to follow the advice - boil any water used for the following:
Bring water to a rolling boil for at least one minute, then allow it to cool naturally before use.
The Patearoa water supply is treated for bacteria but not for protozoa. Boiling your water protects consumers from any risk of protozoa contamination.
Protozoa are microscopic organisms that can cause diarrhoea and vomiting. Babies, young children, pregnant women, the elderly, and people who have weakened immune systems are more at risk of illness. Protozoa, such as cryptosporidium, can contaminate source water when animal faeces enter waterways.
A planned upgrade of the Ranfurly and Patearoa treatment plants is currently underway, with completion expected by December 2025 or earlier. The upgrade includes an ultraviolet (UV) treatment process for protozoa and filtration which will increase our ability to maintain treatment levels after severe weather events. The boil water advisory will be lifted when the treatment upgrade is completed. Read more about these upgrades HERE
There has been no change to the water supplied on this scheme, however the absence of a protozoa barrier presents a risk to public health. Boiling water for consumption until the treatment plant upgrade is completed will remove this risk.
