A cell phone tower in Wānaka was also damaged by fire early this month. Photo: SuppliedA man has been arrested and charged over a series of cellphone tower arsons in the Wānaka area over the past few months.
The 41-year-old has also been charged in relation to a Lindis Pass cell tower arson in early July.
He appeared in Queenstown District Court yesterday (Friday October 24), charged with the arsons, as well as firearms offences.
Acting Detective Sergeant Julie Bowman said the arsons were not only frustrating for police, but posed a serious risk to the community.
“The team have worked tirelessly investigating, and we are thankful that no one was hurt as a result of the actions of this individual,” she said.
“This is a good result for our community and they should feel confident we will always work to hold those to account to carry out such mindless attacks.”
She thanked the Wānaka community for its assistance in the investigations.
“Police take these matters seriously, as they have – and continue to have – a significant impact on our community.”
Police declined to provide further comment as the matter is now before the court.
