A close friend of the late Lynley Claridge made a special tribute to her at the Vincent Community Board this week.

Cr Martin McPherson described his dear friend as “an exceptional woman whose heart had room for everyone.”

Lynley was diagnosed with cancer just before the October election, and Martin said close friends and family knew the outcome wasn’t going to be good.

She died on November 19, after serving the Central Otago community for more than 25 years.

Her work as a councillor involved the Naseby Dark Sky initiative and the Vincent Spatial Plan, and she will be remembered for her advocacy for balanced growth, affordable housing and the protection of local heritage.

Martin said even though Lynley was in hospital right on election time, she still made a phone call on the day to congratulate him, “because that was who she was. She really cared about people.”

Regarding her time as community board member and councillor, Martin said she brought the “underdog’s tale,” to the table, including supporting several developers in the community.

“We did clash on numerous occasions,” he said.

Martin offered his condolences on behalf of the community board, to Lynley’s husband John and their family.

“She has left a significant hole in our hearts.”
