Cromwell’s Grace Burke has claimed top spot at an international bodybuilding competition after 12 months of pursuing her dream.

She beat professional athletes from across the South Pacific and Australia at the event held in Christchurch last weekend, winning the ‘Wellness’ title.

It marks the third consecutive win and first major international title for the 25-year-old personal trainer, who set herself a goal a year ago and has kept her eyes on the prize since.

“I've always loved training, but I went through something pretty tough in my life, and I needed something to focus on - a goal,” Grace said.

“A year ago, I told everyone, ‘I’m going to compete, I’m going to get on stage’. I did one show, then the nationals, and then Oceania because of my success.”

Grace’s journey has been driven by discipline and focus, overseen by a coach.

“I’m a very goal-driven person. If I say I’m going to do something, I’ll do everything I can to get there.”

Behind the glamour of the competition lies an intense backstage ritual, involving fake tan and carb loading.

“You’re in a room full of people eating rice cakes and honey. It’s quite funny,” she said.

“We have to get a few layers of tan on...then try and rest as much as you can...and about 30 minutes from showtime, you start pumping up.”

Her category celebrates strong lower-body development.

“It’s more about leg development than symmetry...think big legs,” she said.

Grace, a trainer at NRG’s Cromwell gym, credits her gym community for their constant encouragement, describing their level of support as “insane”.

“They watch all my shows on the livestream...send messages...come and chat to me while I’m doing cardio, keeping me level-headed.”

She also hopes her story motivates others, regardless of age or experience.

“There are athletes that compete in their 50s, 60s, 70s...you’re never too old – it really is just setting your mind to something,” she said.

“Whether it’s a marathon or something else - set a goal.”

With national and Oceania titles secured, Grace is now setting her sights overseas, with pro shows in Australia, Dubai, and Bali on the cards.

Winning her pro card means she is limited to the number of shows she is eligible to compete in now in New Zealand.
